Ford

Ford diecast model cars bring more than a century of American automotive history to the collector's shelf. From the Ford Model T and classic prewar automobiles to the Mustang, Thunderbird, GT40, Bronco, F-Series, Crown Victoria, Torino, and modern performance cars, Ford has produced vehicles that represent many different eras and styles of motoring.

Ford Motor Company was established in 1903 by Henry Ford and became one of the companies most closely associated with the development of large-scale automobile manufacturing. The Model T, introduced in 1908, helped make automobile ownership accessible to a much broader portion of the American public. Ford's history subsequently expanded into family cars, luxury-oriented models, trucks, off-road vehicles, racing cars, and performance automobiles.

For collectors, Ford diecast models offer an unusually broad range of subjects. Whether your collection focuses on American classics, muscle cars, pony cars, pickup trucks, movie and television vehicles, racing history, or modern performance cars, Ford provides numerous possibilities for building a collection around a favorite era or model.

A Brief History of Ford

Henry Ford's early automobiles included the Model A and Model N before the introduction of the Ford Model T in 1908. The Model T became particularly important because Ford developed manufacturing methods that allowed the automobile to be produced on a very large scale.

Ford's influence was not limited to passenger cars. The company also developed commercial vehicles and trucks, participated extensively in motorsports, and produced aircraft and military equipment during periods of national mobilization.

Over the decades, Ford's American lineup expanded to include names that became familiar to generations of drivers. Models such as the Fairlane, Galaxie, Falcon, Torino, Thunderbird, Crown Victoria, Taurus, Escort, and Fusion represent different chapters in Ford's passenger-car history.

For diecast collectors, this long history means that a Ford collection does not have to follow one particular style. A display can move from a Model T to a 1950s Thunderbird, a 1960s Mustang, a 1970s Torino, a 1980s Mustang GT, and a modern Mustang or Bronco.

Ford Mustang Diecast Models

The Ford Mustang is one of the most important subjects in Ford diecast collecting.

Ford introduced the Mustang to the public at the New York World's Fair on April 17, 1964. The original Mustang was offered as a hardtop and convertible, with a fastback joining the lineup later in the 1965 model year. Its combination of sporty styling, compact proportions, available performance equipment, and relatively accessible pricing established the Mustang as an important new type of American performance car.

The Mustang's long production history provides collectors with an extensive range of generations and special models.

Classic Mustang

Early Mustang models are especially popular subjects for diecast collectors. Depending on the release, shoppers may encounter:

• 1965–1966 Mustang
• Mustang Fastback
• Mustang Convertible
• Shelby GT350
• Shelby GT500
• Mustang Mach 1
• Boss 302
• Boss 429
• Other first-generation performance versions

The 1969 Mustang Mach 1, for example, became associated with the performance-focused direction of late-1960s Mustang design. Ford offered the Mach 1 with a range of performance engines, including the available 428 Cobra Jet.

Later Mustang Generations

Mustang collecting can continue through the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s with models such as the Mustang II, Fox-body Mustang, SN95/New Edge Mustang, S197, S550, and newer generations.

This makes Mustang diecast models particularly useful for collectors who want to create a chronological display showing how Ford's pony car changed over the decades.

Ford F-Series Diecast Trucks

Ford's history extends far beyond passenger cars. The F-Series is one of the company's most important truck families and has been part of Ford's lineup since the 1948 model year. Ford describes the original 1948 F-Series as its first newly designed postwar truck line.

Over successive generations, the F-Series developed from conventional pickups into an extensive family of light-duty, heavy-duty, commercial, and chassis-cab trucks.

Collectors may encounter diecast models representing:

• Ford F-100
• Ford F-150
• Ford F-250
• Ford F-350
• Ford F-Series Super Duty
• Classic Ford pickups
• Custom and performance-oriented pickups
• Commercial and utility configurations

The F-150 is particularly significant to Ford truck collecting, but older F-Series models provide an opportunity to explore the styling and engineering changes that occurred from one generation to another.

A collection combining a 1950s Ford pickup, a classic F-100, a 1970s F-Series, and a modern F-150 can provide a compact visual history of Ford trucks.

Ford Bronco Diecast Models

The Ford Bronco provides another important area of Ford collecting. Introduced for the 1966 model year, the original Bronco was designed as a compact four-wheel-drive vehicle aimed at combining off-road capability with everyday usability. Ford has described the Bronco as an early vehicle specifically identified with the emerging sport-utility category.

The first-generation Bronco remained relatively compact, while the 1978 redesign moved to a larger F-Series-based platform. Later generations continued to evolve before the Bronco name returned for the modern era.

Bronco diecast models can therefore appeal to several different collecting interests:

• Classic 4x4 vehicles
• Vintage Ford trucks
• Off-road vehicles
• SUV history
• Modern Ford performance and adventure vehicles

When comparing Bronco models, pay attention to the generation and body configuration because the differences between generations can be substantial.

Ford Thunderbird

The Ford Thunderbird represents another major branch of Ford's history. Introduced in 1955, the Thunderbird was positioned as a sporty personal car rather than a direct competitor to traditional two-seat European sports cars.

The Thunderbird evolved considerably over the years, progressing from the early two-seat models to larger personal luxury cars and later generations. Its changing dimensions and styling make Thunderbird diecast models particularly interesting for collectors of 1950s, 1960s, and later American automobiles.

Early Thunderbirds can provide a strong centerpiece for a classic-car display, while later Thunderbird models can help document the changing character of American personal luxury cars.

Ford Performance and Racing Models

Ford has a long history in motorsports, and racing is an important part of Ford diecast collecting.

Among the most recognizable Ford racing subjects is the Ford GT40, which became famous through international endurance racing and its victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Later Ford performance cars have included the Ford GT, Mustang-based race cars, and numerous competition versions of Ford production vehicles.

Mustang racing models can also be collected according to series, team, driver, or era. A collector interested in motorsports may choose to focus on competition liveries rather than road-car specifications.

When selecting a racing model, details such as the racing series, year, driver, team, number, body configuration, and livery can be just as important as the underlying Ford model.

Classic Ford Cars

Ford's catalog provides numerous subjects for collectors interested in classic American automobiles.

Depending on availability, Ford diecast collections may include models such as:

• Model T
• Model A
• Deluxe
• Custom
• Fairlane
• Galaxie
• Falcon
• Ranchero
• Torino
• Crown Victoria
• LTD
• Maverick
• Pinto
• Escort
• Taurus
• Other historic Ford automobiles

The Ford Ranchero, for example, combines passenger-car styling with pickup functionality and represents an interesting category between traditional automobiles and trucks.

The Ford Galaxie and Fairlane are also useful subjects for collectors interested in the full-size and intermediate American cars of the 1950s and 1960s.

Ford Movie, TV, Police and Specialty Vehicles

Ford vehicles have appeared extensively in popular culture, making certain diecast models especially appealing to collectors who collect by character, film, television series, or vehicle role.

Ford models have also served as police cars, taxis, emergency vehicles, government vehicles, utility vehicles, and other specialized automobiles. A collector may therefore find several versions of the same basic Ford model representing very different purposes.

When shopping for a specialty Ford diecast, consider not only the vehicle itself but also the livery, markings, equipment, body configuration, and other details represented by the specific release.

Choosing a Ford Diecast Model

With such a large selection of Ford vehicles available across more than a century, it helps to decide what type of collection you want to build.

Consider:

• Model: Mustang, F-Series, Bronco, Thunderbird, GT, Torino, Model T, or another Ford.
• Generation: Different generations can have completely different styling and specifications.
• Year: Important when collecting a particular historical version.
• Body style: Coupe, fastback, convertible, sedan, wagon, pickup, SUV, or race car.
• Trim or performance version: GT, Mach 1, Boss, Shelby, Cobra, Raptor, and other designations can distinguish related models.
• Livery: Particularly important for racing, police, commercial, and movie/TV vehicles.
• Scale: Choose a scale that works with your existing collection.
• Manufacturer: Construction, detailing, opening parts, interior design, and finish can vary by manufacturer.

Ford Diecast Model Car Scales

Ford diecast models are available in several popular scales.

1/12 scale models provide a large display presence and can showcase substantial exterior and interior detail. They work particularly well as centerpiece models.

1/18 scale is a popular choice for collectors who want a strong combination of size and detail. It is especially well suited to classic cars, Mustangs, performance cars, and larger Ford trucks.

1/24 scale provides an excellent balance between display size and detail and is useful for collectors who want to represent many different Ford models without requiring as much shelf space.

1/43 scale is ideal for building a broader collection in a relatively compact display. Collectors can represent multiple generations, body styles, and Ford models while keeping the overall display manageable.

Smaller scales may also be available for particular Ford subjects. Always check the individual product specifications for the exact scale, dimensions, construction, and features.

Building a Ford Diecast Collection

There are many ways to organize a Ford collection.

A Mustang collection can follow the car through its generations, from the original 1960s models through modern performance versions.

A Ford truck collection can focus on the evolution of the F-Series, supplemented by Bronco, Ranchero, and other utility-oriented vehicles.

A classic Ford collection can concentrate on Model T, Model A, Thunderbird, Fairlane, Galaxie, and other historic automobiles.

Collectors interested in motorsports can build a display around Ford racing history, including GT40, Ford GT, Mustang competition cars, and other racing subjects.

Another option is to collect Ford models based on a particular scale, allowing different vehicles to be displayed together at consistent proportions.
